South Carolina Governor asks for federal drought assistance

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – Governor Mark Sanford has asked that all but two of South Carolina’s counties be declared federal disaster areas because of the region’s ongoing drought.

In the letter sent Wednesday morning to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer, Sanford said more than 30 percent of this year’s harvest of corn, hay and pasture crops has been lost because of the drought.

Sanford made a stop at the water treatment plant in Pickens today to see first hand the devastation of the drought and to listen to desperate cattlement. Farmers told the governor about their dry pastures and the need for affordable hay. One farmer told the governor if he doesnt get rain soon, he will be forced to sell his farm.

If the Upstate is granted a drought declaration that could mean federal aid for farmers.
